ARTH 303-DL1: Medieval Irish Art and Culture
(Fall 2017)

Online

Section Information for Fall 2017

This course explores the rich history, art, and culture of Ireland from the early Christian period in 700 to the early Tudor rule by England in 1500. We will begin the course by exploring the monastic communities at sites such as Clonmacnoise, Glendalough, and Iona, peer onto the pages of the Book of Kells, and unravel the knotwork of the Tara Brooch and Ardagh Chalice. The Viking raids will transform our study of Ireland as a major trade center and redefine the importance of Dublin. Heroic battles of Brian Boru shift our focus to the resurgence of Christian reforms and set the scene for the creation of St. Patrick’s cathedral. The course ends with a study of the Norman and early Tudor English attempts at securing Ireland, from the battles of Strongbow to the legal decrees of Richard the II and his successors.

ARTH 303 DL1 is a distance education section.
