Section Information for Fall 2019
Through reading and discussion of memoirs, diaries, novels, official documents, and scholarly studies based on case studies from around the world in the 20th century, this course will explore the relationship between detention and modern politics. The course will primarily focus on the history of the concentration camp as lived experience with a secondary focus on other modern forms of detention. Issues for discussion include rehabilitation, isolation, redemption, corrective labor, extermination, reeducation, and ethical life in extreme situations. Case studies may include the history of punishment, Native American reservations, concentration camps in the South African Anglo-Boer War, Nazi labor and extermination camps, the Soviet Gulag, Japanese-American internment camps, detention systems of the Global War on Terror, or others.
